Jed Alexanderjedalexander@sbcglobal.netBioIf you're looking for a classic and timeless look, my work harks back to the golden age of 20th century children's book illustration, but with a contemporary feel and rich palette. After working in the editorial field for 10 years for such publications as LA Weekly, The Sacramento News and Review and The Santa Cruz Metro, I was inspired to return to my first love, children's illustration. To further this aim, I created a portfolio inspired by classic children's tales, for which I received best in show at the North/Central Society of Children's Book Writer's and Illustrator's Spring Spirit conference in 2010. I also received an Ignatz nomination for my graphic novel work for Alternative Comics. I studied illustration at San Jose State University where I received my degree. I am a current member of SCBWI.

Jim Caputojim@groggydog.comBioJim graduated from art school in 1986 and began his career as a graphic designer for an ad agency in Philadelphia. After doing work by hand for a few years, he finally acquired a Mac. This allowed him to move on as an art director working for a few design studios along the way. Illustration has always been his passion and in 1998 he opened Groggy Dog Studios. After sending out a promo piece, he landed an editorial illustration for the Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition. Groggy Dog Studios was up and running. “As a kid,” Jim said, “ I was always reprimanded for daydreaming and now I'm getting paid for it!” In 2000, he left Philadelphia and moved to Orlando, Florida. While looking for a full-time job, he took the time to develop his technique and experiment with a mixed media of watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, and brushed ink. This allowed for a fresh look and began doing work for magazines such as chickaDEE and Muse. After nine years of working as an art director by day and illustrator by night, he decided to make illustration a full-time gig in 2007. Jim quips, “My neighbors are convinced I’m hiding under the Federal Witness Protection Program.” His client list includes The Kennedy Center, Scholastic, Ideals Publications, Norwood House Press, and Harcourt. In his spare time, he enjoys physical fitness, going to movies, and reading. All of which provide an endless amount of inspiration.

Layne Johnsonlayne@laynejohnson.comBioI'm Layne Johnson and I've always loved adventure! And that's exactly what each new book is. A native Texan, I've drawn and painted just about everything! Being a children's book illustrator is also an adventure. I often ask kids if they know what an illustrator does. A kindergartener might say, "You write the pictures in books!" A third grader might say, "You draw the pictures in books!" But I say, "I bring books to life!" I don't draw or paint just what the words say. I draw what comes before the words, what's between the words, what comes after the words. It's my job to make the world of a book larger. I want the reader to "be there" in the book. And when they've taken the journey with me, to say, "Let's read it again!" Why do I do what I do? Because it's FUN! I'm still a kid at heart, so illustrating books for kids is my passion. And empowering children to draw and write is something I cherish — what could be better?! I earned my BFA from the University of Houston and have been a freelance illustrator for more than 25 years.

Marit Menzinmmenzin@verizon.netBioMy kindergarten teacher, Lia, discovered my talent for drawing. I attended many art workshops and I had an oil painter for a mentor while very young. I loved to read books and I also loved to write plays and poems for school. In college I majored in Biology and Chemistry. After a few fires and one suspected carbon monoxide leak at my graduate school laboratory, I decided that I had enough of chemical threats and hazards. I then studied computers and worked as a chemistry high school teacher, and as a computer programmer. As I pursued my scientific career, I continued to illustrate while studying different methods of painting. I participated in workshops, entitled How to Illustrate Children’s Books, at DeCordova museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. My mentor there was the acclaimed illustrator Ilse Plum. In the past 7 years, I have devoted my time to writing and illustrating. I developed my own unique style as a collage artist. My goal as a writer/illustrator is to teach young children through an intriguing story and captivating illustrations.
Marty Jonesmarty@mjarts.comBioMy body of work is fairly eclectic in its nature, and isn't specifically geared toward one type of illustration, however, all of my illustrations are realistically-styled. Over the years I have created a large number of wildlife drawings, portraits, architectural and technical illustrations. I teach art classes for children on an irregular basis; I also do school visits. My first book jacket was published in the fall of 1999; my first children's book was published in 2000. My work has been published internationally in children's books, periodicals and on the Internet.
