Barbara Pollakbarbara@happypix.comBioBarbara Pollak is an Illustrator, Painter and Author who lives in the sunny Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco with her husband, their young children, one cat and two tropical fish. Since becoming a full time freelancer in 1995, her work has appeared in publications like Fortune, Seventeen, Girl's Life, Time For Kids, TWIST, Business 2.0, the Utne Reader, the Wall Street Journal, Newsday and numerous others. She has also created cards, posters, games and textbook illustrations for children and teen markets. In 2000, she illustrated her first book, "Girl Stuff" for Harcourt Brace/Gulliver. Since then, she has gone on to illustrate the pre-teen book series "DISH" (Penguin Putnam/ Grosset & Dunlop), "Betty's Book of Laundry Secrets" (Rodale Press) and "Barefoot in Fire". Recently, Ms. Pollak wrote and illustrated her first picture book for younger audiences about gardening, community and food. Our Community Garden was published in 2004. She is currently working on her next book for kids about a girl who has lots of pockets. In her free time she enjoys traveling, painting and collecting Japanese fashion magazines.

Brent Halebrent.hale@mac.comBioI graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX with a BFA. Then I attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA where I majored in Industrial Design and Transportation Design. In 1982 I landed my first job at Spradley Signs where I worked my way up from post hole digger to sign painter and then eventually Art Director. 5 years later, I started doing freelance graphic design and illustration. I also built a reputation in East Texas as a mural artist doing work for various restaurants and businesses. After starving for a couple of years, I decided it was time to move on. So, we loaded up the truck and moved to Tyler, Texas where I began working with Brookshires Grocery Company in their in-house advertising department. As Art Director, my responsibilities included advertising design, package design, print collateral, and corporate event design and coordination. In 1990 I joined Design Strategy - a small design studio that specialized in business to business marketing through print advertising. I took the position in 1992 at Hanson Design as Senior Art Director. This award winning design firm grew to be one of the top agencies in East Texas. We also formed a side company called Wattu Wear “Art for the Human Torso” - designing innovative apparel with a nostalgic twist. Some of our creations were featured in Graphis Design Annual. In 1995, I took the big leap again and started Brent Hale Artography, later to become Brent Hale Illustration and Design. Currently I am enjoying the busy life of the freelance illustrator, working with some of the best companies in the world on a wide range of projects in the fields of entertainment, advertising, editorial, and publishing. I get to work on projects that challenge me and allow me to draw inspiration from the very things that made me want to be an artist in the first place. And I still   Enjoy the Ride!

Originally from CT, I earned my BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, incorporating an exchange to Parsons in New York, in 1980. I've been working as a professional artist since...I started out as a freelance illustrator for publishing, editorial and design markets- and did everything from computer graphics for the Bank of Boston, to exhibition graphics for museum design; op-ed illustration for the Boston Globe; courtroom drawing; figurines for Disney . . . to being an artist on an archaelogical dig in Jordan. By 1990, I had settled into children's trade and textbook illustration, and also began doing my own writing, focusing on multicultural and creation story themes.  I moved to New Mexico, drawn by multicultural elements and the landscape, which I wanted to paint. In 1995, I moved back east to North Carolina, where I have lived since. I show my current "Waterfall" paintings in Asheville's own, Blue Spiral 1 Gallery.  I also show my original illustrations and continue my book work, for children's books- and other book markets.  I have pursued  related fine arts projects- such as a Public Arts Commission to produce two 300 sq ft murals for the Children's Section of the new Greensboro Public Library (Vision Quest); a mural for the Greensboro Cultural Center followed. I enjoy the diversity of projects I take on...I am especially happy when my more "commercial work" mirrors my dedication to archetype and symbol, and appreciate the balance derived from working as both a painter and an illustrator.

Eventually she started talking and telling everybody about her crazy dreams and ideas. "Write it down," they said, "we don't want to hear it." Elizabeth had the last laugh because now she does it for a living, but she still chews on her pencil. Elizabeth is an award winning children's book illustrator and writer. Her first picture book, THE PRINCE'S DIARY, was named No.1 2006 Valentine's Day Pick by Book Sense. Her latest is the bilingual PACO AND THE GIANT CHILE PLANT, for which she's been learning to speak Spanish. She writes for the SCBWI Bulletin and along with other illustration projects is currently working on her second novel.

Elizabeth Wolfliz@melissaturk.comBioElizabeth Wolf has been a working illustrator for over 20 years, having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan School of Art. She moved to Boise in 1996 with her family, after living in Washington, DC for most of her career. She creates oil pastel illustrations for clients including the National Geographic Society, the Washington Post, Delta Airlines, McDonalds, Mattel and others. She illustrates children's books for Grosset and Dunlap, Handprint Press, Random House, Simon and Schuster, National Geographic and others. Liz's maps appear regularly in Smithsonian Magazine, Americas Magazine, and in the educational market. In addition, her theatre posters advertise the work of Second Stage Theatre (New York City), Syracuse Stage (Syracuse, NY), Arena Stage (Washington, DC), Capital Repertory Theatre (Albany, NY), and Boise Contemporary Theater (Boise, ID) In Idaho, she has created several site-specific installations. Her award-winning design for a 36 foot-diameter terrazzo floor medallion was installed in the new Boise Airport Terminal in 2003. Elizabeth has received grants and commissions from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the Boise City Arts Commission. In 2004, she received the Idaho Governor's Award in the Arts. The Society of Illustrators, Print Magazine, the Illustrators Club of Washington, DC, and others have recognized her work. She is a member of the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators.
