Can any artist be on your website? Is it free?
The Picturebook online portfolios are free to current advertisers in Picturebook. You can upload up to 30 images in 3 albums.

I'm interested in advertising in your book. Can I get a free copy of the Picturebook?
For examples of our printing quality, tear sheets from Picturebook are available to artists anytime. Free copies of Picturebook are mailed each year to publishers and other art buyers only. You may purchase a copy of Picturebook for $29.95 by calling 888.490.0100

What is the easiest and most cost effective way to submit an ad for Picturebook?
Send us your digital file and we'll do the rest.

Can I send a pasteup/mechanical for my ad?
No, it's a digital world. Either you send your digital layout or we will do it for you. If you like to design your own ad, but don't know anything about computers or Quark, choose the custom sketch option. Our designers build your page layout based on the sketch that you provide.

All of this production information is confusing...I don't understand most of the terminology. But as an illustrator, I would like to advertise in Picturebook. How can I produce my ad easily?
You have several choices:

  • Reserve a standard page design for your ad and send a scan. Use a professional photo lab to scan your original artwork and make sure you see print proofs(we use US prepress sheetfed SWOP standards)  to make sure the color matches your artwork.
  • Hire a graphic designer (or barter services) to design your ad...refer them to this website for guidance. Your designer will guide you through the production process. For the highest quality ad, be sure your artwork is scanned professionally--either by a color separator of your designer's choice or by Picturebook.
  • Send your transparencies with color bars and let us design a custom page.

What are color bars?
Kodak Color Separation Guides and Kodak Gray Scales. Ask your photo lab to place them on the edge of your art when they shoot your transparencies for more accurate reproduction of your artwork. If your photographer doesn't know about these, you can order them from Kodak: 800.728.6377.

Can I send original artwork?
Sending original artwork is highly discouraged. You should always duplicate your transparencies and all files, and retain a copy, just in case your package is damaged or lost. Unfortunately, this can happen.

Instead of hiring a color separator to make my color separations, can I scan my artwork on my desktop scanner?
A desktop scanner does not always provide the color quality of a professional separator. What you see on your monitor is not always what the printed colors will be and the images may appear dull or flat on your ad. When your work is professionally scanned, the color separator is responsible for providing an accurate color match to your artwork. When you scan your own work, you are responsible for the color accuracy.

Can I submit an ad using transparencies for some of my artwork and high resolution scans also?
Yes. Design your page in Quark with low resolution placement scans of your transparencies in position in your layout. Mark as FPO (for position only) right on top of the image in your layout. High resolution color separations will be made from your transparencies and will be placed in your layout following your FPO scans. We will provide you with a CMYK proof to check the color accuracy of these scans.

Place the high resolution images in position within your layout. Do not resize them within the layout program. They must appear on the layout at 100%. You can check the color accuracy of your provided scans on the proof, but you will be responsible for all changes to these scans. Picturebook does not make changes to pre-scanned high resolution images.

When will I receive my 500 reprints?
Reprints are shipped ground delivery after the books are distributed. You should receive them within one month after you receive your copy of Picturebook.

Can I get a copy of the Picturebook mailing list?
Our mailing list is not for sale and is not available to the public. If you have clients whom you would like to receive Picturebook each year, please email the name, company and address for each. If we don't already have them in our system, we will be happy to add them and will ensure that copies of Picturebook arrive on their desks as soon as possible!

I have decided to change my agent, but I have already submitted my ad under another agent. Can you switch it to the new agent's section?
After you have submitted your ad, your page is placed in Picturebook with your original agent's section of pages. No changes to page position will be made after submission. You and your two agents should reach an agreement on how to handle the job referrals for the coming year.

Can I request page placement in the book?
You may request a right or a left page, and we will try to honor your request. Should you ask for either the front of the book, a certain page, or placement next to another artist who submitted his ad 2 months earlier? Please don't.

Ads are grouped together if they are submitted together at the same time in a package...such as an agent section. If an agent has an artist who wants to be added on a later submission, we can not guarantee his ad to be placed in his agent's section. For best results, artists should submit with their agent's original submission.

Can a group of illustrators go together and get a multiple page discount?
Multiple page discounts begin with as little as 2 pages (price of a spread.) To receive further discounts on 3 or more pages only one contact number for all of the advertisers in the section can be listed.

To receive the discount, an agent sends one payment for the illustrators, handles all communication with the artists, and coordinates the entire submission. All ads must be submitted together at the same time. Agents must follow the agent discount guidelines to receive the special pricing.

Are half page ads allowed?
The smallest ad that an artist can purchase is a single page. Agents sometimes divide their pages among their different illustrators, but these are still considered full pages.

Can I use Quark 3.32 for my layout?
Yes.

How should I collect my files for my digital ad submission designed in Quark? What should be included?
Your submission should include 3 files:

1. Images in your ad, (either low or hi resolution)

2. Fonts that you have used in your layout.

3. Quark layout .

Please label everthing with your last name (ie: Smith J_images, Smith J_fonts, Smith J_layout).

If you collect your files for output through your Quark program, Quark will collect all files needed to print your ad, except for the fonts. You have to attach them. (Use the "Usage tool under Utilities in Quark to make sure that all files are linked correctly.)

I am sending my ad digitally with all hi resolution files included and ready to go to the printer. Why can't I put my high resolution art files on a separate disc from my Quark layout?
All files used must be linked to the layout. If they are on seperate disk, they won't be linked. Be sure that the images that you are placing in your layout appear at 100%. Do not resize them in Quark.
